Best Rhythm Games: From Osu to Beat Saber to Everything In Between
The best rhythm games — every flavor from arcade dance pads to VR lightsabers to anime J-pop to roguelike rhythm-RPG hybrids.
Rhythm games are one of those genres where your specific taste matters more than any ranking could capture. Some people want arcade perfection with lightguns and buttons. Some want VR full-body workout. Some want relaxing cozy rhythm. Some want the hardest charts in the genre, designed to destroy your hands. Here's what's worth your time across the whole spectrum of what "rhythm game" can mean.
The VR revolution
Beat Saber is the best-selling VR game of all time for a reason. Lightsabers. Blocks flying at you in time with music. Gradually-escalating difficulty that turns your living room into a workout zone. The custom song community has ported essentially every song you'd want. If you have a VR headset, you already own Beat Saber or you should.
Pistol Whip is rhythm game meets first-person shooter. Shoot enemies to the beat. Duck under obstacles. It's John Wick if John Wick was set to synthwave. Genuinely one of the most fun VR games ever made.
Synth Riders is the more dance-focused VR rhythm game. Hit orbs with your hands in flowing patterns rather than slashing blocks. Feels more like actual dancing than Beat Saber's combat-rhythm style.
The arcade classics on modern platforms
Dance Dance Revolution is still alive in arcades and PC through Stepmania-like clones. The legacy of DDR runs through essentially every rhythm game made since. If you have a dance pad and some floor space, nothing else recreates the physical challenge.
Osu! is the free-to-play rhythm game that broke a generation. Click circles to the beat with mouse/tablet precision. Millions of community-made charts. Sharp learning curve but the community is massive and the game is effectively infinite. Still the best pure precision rhythm experience on PC.
Guitar Hero / Rock Band franchises had their heyday in the late 2000s but are mostly dormant now. The remakes on current platforms are still playable if you find the plastic guitar controllers. Clone Hero is the free spiritual successor that keeps the scene alive.
The modern indie rhythm games
Crypt of the NecroDancer is what happens when you mash a rhythm game with a roguelike. Move to the beat through procedurally generated dungeons. Extremely hard to describe, immediately obvious once you play it for five minutes. Modern classic.
Rhythm Doctor is a rhythm game disguised as a medical drama. Hit the seven-beat on dying patients to revive them. The concept sounds absurd; the execution is genius. Indie standout from recent years.
Hi-Fi Rush from Tango Gameworks is character-action rhythm combat. Every punch, dodge, and movement syncs to the beat. Cel-shaded gorgeous. One of the best rhythm games of the decade. Tragically the studio was shut down shortly after release.
The cozy/relaxing rhythm games
A Dance of Fire and Ice is a minimalist two-tile rhythm game with music that builds beautifully. Looks simple; the charts get brutal. Perfect for developing pure rhythm skill without combat or stress mechanics.
Unbeatable [demo only currently] is a visual novel + rhythm game hybrid about a rock band in a world where music is illegal. The aesthetic is gorgeous, the music is excellent, and the rhythm gameplay is solid. Full game releases soon.
Muse Dash is anime pop rhythm game with simple two-button input. Massive song library through DLC packs. Both relaxed and challenging depending on difficulty settings.
The music-driven JRPGs
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is the pinnacle of Final Fantasy music celebration packaged as a rhythm game. Hundreds of Final Fantasy songs. Unlockable characters. Adorable aesthetics. If you've ever cared about FF music, this is essential.
Patapon 1+2 Remastered blends rhythm game with strategy RPG. Command your warriors by drumming rhythms. The first two are remastered on PS4; Patapon 3 never got a modern re-release.
Sayonara Wild Hearts is a dreamlike auto-running rhythm game that feels like an interactive music video. Short playthrough (2-3 hours) but memorable.
The precision skill-tester picks
osu!mania is specifically the 4K/7K keysmash mode of osu, which competes directly with DDR-style keyboard charts. Hardcore players clear 8-star charts here; the skill ceiling is essentially infinite.
EZ2ON Reboot R is the Korean arcade rhythm game now available on PC. Premium song list, excellent charting, real precision required. More accessible than some arcade classics.
DJMax Respect V is another Korean arcade rhythm game brought to PC. DLC-heavy (you'll buy song packs) but the base game is great and the charting is world-class.
The J-pop / anime corner
Project Sekai Colorful Stage is Vocaloid + original music in a gacha rhythm game format. The rhythm gameplay is genuinely excellent and the song selection spans the entire Hatsune Miku universe.
Arcaea is mobile-first but has the most innovative 3D note system in the rhythm genre. Songs approach from angles rather than a flat scroll. Unique and beautiful.
Groove Coaster is a Japanese mobile/PC rhythm game with a specific ride-the-beat aesthetic that feels great.
What we make at Choost
We're not making rhythm games — the music licensing alone would bury us. But the satisfaction of "hit the beat perfectly, feel like a god" is something that carries over into any skill-based game including our own. Granny's Rampage has a specific flow state when everything's clicking that isn't rhythm game flow specifically but shares some neural geography. For other niche indie genres, the best idle games space has similar cozy energy.
The short answer
For VR: Beat Saber.
For PC precision: Osu!
For console-friendly rhythm: Hi-Fi Rush.
For free and infinite: Osu! or Clone Hero.
For cozy: A Dance of Fire and Ice or Muse Dash.
For the weird genre blend: Crypt of the NecroDancer or Rhythm Doctor.
For music nostalgia: Theatrhythm Final Bar Line.
Rhythm games are personal in a way most genres aren't. The music you love matters more than the exact game. Find one that plays the songs you care about and the mechanics will grow on you.
