Games Like Persona 5 for More JRPG Social Simulation Excellence

The best games like Persona 5 — modern JRPGs with social simulation, calendar-based life mechanics, and stylish presentation that defines modern RPGs.

Persona 5 Royal is widely considered the greatest modern JRPG. Atlus built a game where social simulation, dungeon exploration, and demon negotiation all interconnect through a 100+ hour narrative about teenagers fighting corruption in Tokyo. The style — from the music to the UI to the character designs — is unmatched. Joker, the Phantom Thieves, the Palace infiltrations, the calendar-based daily life — Persona 5 consolidated everything the series learned across decades.

Finding games that combine Persona 5's specific strengths is harder than typical "games like" guides suggest. Here's what comes closest.

The Atlus Library

Persona 3 Reload is the modern remake of the series' formative modern entry. Same style commitment, darker tone, excellent combat.

Persona 4 Golden is the beloved second modern Persona entry. Now available on multiple platforms.

Persona 5 Strikers is the Musou-style sequel that continues the Phantom Thieves' adventures. Action combat rather than turn-based but same characters.

Persona 5 Tactica is the tactical RPG spinoff. Different combat, same world.

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth combines Persona 3 and 4 casts in Etrian Odyssey-style dungeon crawler.

Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth adds Persona 5 cast to the formula.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is Atlus's darker demon-collecting franchise. Much more mature themes than Persona, deeper combat mechanics.

Shin Megami Tensei V (original release) and Shin Megami Tensei IV, IV Apocalypse, Nocturne, and Strange Journey Redux are the broader SMT library that Persona evolved from.

Catherine Full Body is Atlus's puzzle-adventure-dating game hybrid.

The Social Sim JRPGs

Persona's social simulation mechanic is hard to replicate. Games that attempt it:

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore (Wii U original, Switch port) is the Fire Emblem-Persona crossover with music idol theming.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth has monster collecting with some social elements.

Story of Seasons series has relationship mechanics in farming sim format.

Stardew Valley has social simulation in farming context. Full coverage here.

Rune Factory 5 and the Rune Factory series combine farming sim with JRPG combat and relationships.

The Alliance Alive HD Remastered is JRPG with complex relationship systems.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes has over 100 recruitable characters with interconnected narratives.

The Turn-Based JRPG Masterpieces

If you loved Persona 5's turn-based combat and character progression:

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 delivers one of the most imaginative JRPG worlds with 100+ hours of content.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age is classical turn-based JRPG perfection.

Sea of Stars from Sabotage Studio is retro-inspired JRPG with timing-based combat.

Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2 use "HD-2D" aesthetic with eight interweaving stories.

Chained Echoes captures SNES-era JRPG energy with modern quality-of-life.

Bravely Default II is classic turn-based JRPG with innovative combat.

Final Fantasy X has similar character-driven narrative and turn-based combat to Persona's style.

Dragon Quest XI is the closest "more Persona" experience in classical turn-based form.

The Modern Action JRPGs

Final Fantasy XVI took the series fully into action territory. Dark medieval fantasy setting.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth continues the Remake project.

Tales of Arise is modern Tales JRPG with tight real-time combat.

Scarlet Nexus combines action combat with brain-punk aesthetic.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox and Ys X: Nordics continue Falcom's action JRPG series.

Kingdom Hearts III continues the Disney-Final Fantasy crossover.

The Political/Complex JRPGs

Trails of Cold Steel series from Falcom is politically complex JRPG with developing character relationships across multiple interconnected games. Arguably closest to Persona 5 in terms of character depth and narrative investment.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak is the latest Trails entry.

Trails in the Sky trilogy predates Cold Steel but establishes the broader Trails universe.

Suikoden series is character-recruiting JRPG with political drama. Suikoden I & II HD Remaster brings classic entries to modern platforms.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is tactical JRPG with political narrative.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses revolutionized the tactical JRPG formula with academy-based social simulation. Persona fans gravitate toward this for similar school-setting social mechanics.

Fire Emblem Engage continues the series.

The Style-Forward Modern JRPGs

Part of Persona 5's appeal is style. Games with comparable stylistic commitment:

NieR: Automata is Yoko Taro's action RPG with distinctive post-apocalyptic aesthetic.

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... is the remake that precedes Automata.

Catherine Full Body (mentioned above).

Gravity Rush 2 has unique superhuman movement and stylized presentation.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is Vanillaware's sci-fi visual novel-tactical RPG. Different format but similar style commitment.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir from Vanillaware is gorgeous 2D action RPG.

Dragon's Crown is Vanillaware's beat-em-up RPG.

The Modern Console JRPGs

Tales of Berseria is the Tales series at its darker moments.

Kingdom Hearts series remains appealing for Disney-Final Fantasy fans.

Star Ocean: The Second Story R is the remake of the PS1 classic.

Unicorn Overlord from Vanillaware is tactical JRPG with auto-battle squad combat.

What we make at Choost

We're a small indie studio. Our games: Granny's Rampage — a bullet heaven where grandma grabs a minigun and fights through hell — and Granny's Gambit, a Victorian deckbuilder roguelike starring a card-slinging nan with a chip on her shoulder. Granny's Rampage is $2.99 on itch (Windows) and Google Play (Android), with the Steam launch on June 22 (also $2.99). Granny's Gambit is pay-what-you-want on itch.

Why Persona 5 Stands Alone

Persona 5 succeeds through perfect execution of a complex formula. The daily calendar system forces you to prioritize — time spent improving social stats is time not spent training Personas, and vice versa. The dungeons are mechanically varied (each Palace has distinct puzzle mechanics). The characters have genuine arcs. The music is legendary. The UI is iconic.

Most "games like Persona 5" fall short because they replicate one element but not the combination. A turn-based JRPG with great characters. A social simulation with good storytelling. A stylish game with shallow systems. Persona 5 succeeds at all of it simultaneously.

The broader JRPG scene continues producing games that attempt parts of the Persona formula. Some succeed (Fire Emblem: Three Houses nailed the academy-social-simulation angle). Most don't quite match it, which is why Persona 5 remains the benchmark seven years after release.

Start with Persona 3 Reload if you haven't played it (closest Persona experience). Fire Emblem: Three Houses for academy-based social simulation. Trails of Cold Steel for politically complex JRPG. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for massive fantasy JRPG. Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance for darker Atlus demon-collecting. All capture pieces of what Persona 5 delivers, and together they cover most of the modern JRPG landscape.
