Hades 2 Tips: Surviving the Unseen and Everything Beyond

Hades 2 tips for new players — weapon strategies, boon priorities, arcana cards, and the stuff the game doesn't explicitly teach you about Melinoë's journey.

Hades II is the rare sequel that's bigger, deeper, and more ambitious than its legendary predecessor while keeping the core combat DNA intact. Melinoë fights her way through the Underworld and the surface world while managing two-direction progression, a new arcana card system, multiple weapons with their own philosophies, and relationships across a much larger cast of gods than Zagreus dealt with.

Here's what I wish I'd known about Hades 2 — tips that apply from early attempts through late-game Testing of the Fates runs. This assumes Early Access state content as of 2026; later updates may shift specifics.

The arcana card system

Arcana cards are Hades 2's biggest new mechanic. You have a set of cards with point costs. Each has a passive effect that applies for your run. Arcana cards have levels that unlock through specific achievements.

Starting priorities:

  • The Moon Rises — Extra Omega attack damage
  • The Sorceress — Mana-regen bonus (huge for casting-heavy builds)
  • The Titan — Bonus armor

Mid-game priorities:

  • The Wheel — Reduces arcana grasp cost (letting you fit more cards)
  • The Queen — Chance to resurrect after death
  • The Hermit — Reveals more information about encounters

High-investment priorities:

  • The Sphinx — Each unique boon you've collected this run grants a small bonus
  • The Judgement — Significant boon power boost at cost of higher difficulty

Arcana cards can be combined for synergy. Build your loadout around what your planned run wants to emphasize.

Weapon philosophy

Each weapon plays very differently. Understanding each one's flow is critical.

Sister Blades (Cestus Melete): Fast combos with exceptional cast-spam potential. Cast becomes your primary damage on many builds.

Umbral Flames (Moros): Ranged damage with charged Omega attacks. Positions well against everything.

Witch's Staff (Selene): Mana-based spell-like Omega attacks. Ramps up damage as mana increases.

Argent Skull (Nuwa): Throwable skull with sticky mechanics. Chaotic and high-damage when played right.

Moonstone Axe (Hecate): Heavy single-target damage. Slower pace but hits hard.

Recommendation: Try each weapon. Don't settle on one too early. Hades 2's weapons feel more distinct than Hades 1's did.

Boon priority for different builds

Hades 2 has a different pantheon from the original. Different gods offer different synergies.

Damage-focused builds:

  • Zeus (lightning chain damage)
  • Apollo (daze + extra damage)
  • Ares (blade rift AoE)

Cast-focused builds:

  • Hera (Hex sinks into enemies)
  • Aphrodite (charm + weakness)
  • Hecate (cast transformations)

Survival builds:

  • Hestia (burn regen)
  • Demeter (chill + slows)
  • Poseidon (knockback escape)

Balanced builds:

  • Multiple gods with moderate investment each

Don't stack the same god more than necessary. Diminishing returns on repeated boons of the same type. Spread across 3-4 gods for best results.

Resource management

Hades 2 has a bajillion resources. Understanding what each does matters:

Bones: Currency for upgrading cards/cosmetics. Earn from runs.

Moonstones: High-tier upgrades. Rarer, more impactful.

Gemstones: Mid-tier currency for the Crossroads vendor.

Nectar: Gift to NPCs for relationship progression.

Ambrosia: Rarer gift for deeper relationships.

Mana / Magick: Spell casting resource. Increases through certain boons/cards.

Don't hoard early. Spend bones and moonstones on upgrades as you get them. Having 3,000 bones sitting unused is the worst mistake.

The surface vs Underworld paths

Hades 2 has two major paths: Down (toward Chronos in the Underworld) and Up (toward Olympus on the surface). They have different enemies, themes, and final bosses.

Early game: Focus on whichever path matches your current boon setup.

Mid game: Alternate between them. Each run gives resources for the other.

Late game: Specialization — build loadouts specifically for each path's unique challenges.

Specific combat tips

Rush enemies. Standing still gets you killed. Hades 2 wants you aggressive and mobile.

Dash is invincibility frames. Use it liberally. Cancel attacks into dashes. Dash through projectiles.

The Omega attack is a huge commitment. It does significant damage but locks you in animation. Use it when enemies are stunned or grouped.

Special attacks are situational. They cost more mana than basic attacks but can bypass enemy patterns. Save them for specific moments.

Cast is often your best damage. Many builds make cast the primary source of damage rather than basic attacks.

The relationship system

Melinoë has complex relationships with multiple gods and characters. Nectar/Ambrosia gifts raise relationships. Higher relationships give you:

  • Unique dialogue
  • Keepsakes with significant mechanical bonuses
  • Story progression for specific NPCs
  • Combat benefits during runs

Priority NPCs to build relationships with early:

  • Hecate (mentor, unlocks training upgrades)
  • Moros (companion, unlocks Umbral Flames)
  • Apollo (major boon provider, story importance)

Don't try to max everyone simultaneously. Focus on a few relationships at a time.

The Chaos mechanic

Chaos boons require a temporary HP debuff in exchange for powerful bonuses. Some runs benefit enormously from Chaos; others find the HP loss unbearable.

Take Chaos when: Your build needs specific rare boons. The debuff will end before you need full HP.

Skip Chaos when: You're low on HP already. The specific effect doesn't help your build.

Legendary boons

Each god has legendary boons requiring specific prerequisites. These are build-defining.

Zeus Legendary (Splitting Bolt): Multiple lightning targets simultaneously. Game-changing for AoE builds.

Apollo Legendary (Dazing Duration): Extends daze significantly. Stacks with multiple Apollo boons.

Aphrodite Legendary (Dying Lament): Charmed enemies explode on death. Great for build diversity.

Set your runs to aim for specific legendary boons when you're specialization your playstyle.

What we make at Choost

Granny's Rampage is a bullet heaven, which shares the "run-based, build-variety-driven, die-and-improve" DNA with Hades' roguelike formula. Completely different moment-to-moment gameplay but same satisfaction of "watch your character become absurd." For more Hades content, the games like Hades post has more, and the best roguelike games post covers the genre.

The shortest version

  • Try every weapon
  • Arcana cards matter — build loadouts
  • Mix 3-4 gods for best boon synergy
  • Dash-through enemies, don't stand still
  • Upgrade your cast damage on most builds
  • Build relationships early with Hecate, Moros, and Apollo
  • Aim for Legendary boons on specialized builds
  • Use Chaos strategically, not reflexively

Hades 2 rewards practice and mechanical mastery more than pure build optimization. The best players don't just have good builds — they have good fundamentals. Focus on playing cleanly first, then dial in specific builds afterward.
