Hollow Knight Bosses Ranked: From Easiest to Absolutely Brutal
Every Hollow Knight boss ranked by difficulty. Complete ranking of base game bosses, Godmaster DLC bosses, and the hardest fights in Team Cherry's masterpiece.
Hollow Knight from Team Cherry has some of the most memorable and challenging boss fights in any metroidvania. The bosses range from accessible early-game encounters that teach you mechanics, through demanding mid-game fights that test your mastery, to the brutal endgame gauntlets that separate completionists from casual players.
This ranking covers every major boss in base game Hollow Knight and the free DLC additions (Grimm Troupe, Lifeblood, Hidden Dreams, Godmaster). Difficulty assessment is based on blind first encounters — boss rematches with full upgrades are generally easier.
Tier 1 — Tutorial Bosses (Easy)
False Knight is your first major encounter. Big armored beetle with predictable attacks. Hit the head when it pops out of the helmet. Teaches you the boss fight rhythm.
Brooding Mawlek is the optional first hidden boss. Three-headed acid-spitting creature. Simple attack patterns, high HP but manageable.
Hornet (first encounter) in Greenpath is where the series starts taking you seriously. Quick attacks, dash attacks, thread-slash attacks. Learn her patterns — you'll fight her again.
Tier 2 — Early Game Bosses (Manageable)
Gruz Mother is optional boss in Forgotten Crossroads. Pregnant creature that bursts into smaller gruzzers when defeated. Fun mechanic.
Mantis Lords are three mantis warriors in Mantis Village. Fight starts 1v1, escalates to 2v1 then 3v1. Beautifully designed fight that teaches pattern recognition.
Soul Master in Soul Sanctum is magic-focused boss. Teleports around, shoots soul orbs, slams ground. Second phase increases speed dramatically.
Broken Vessel is corrupt predecessor to protagonist. Heavy attacks, infected void damage. Teaches environmental hazard management.
Tier 3 — Mid-Game Bosses (Challenging)
Crystal Guardian (and its awakened form) in Crystal Peak. Crystal beam attacks are devastating. Learn its timing.
Dung Defender is the funniest boss in the game. Bumbling dung beetle knight. Easy once you recognize the pattern. His voice acting is delightful.
Collector in Watcher's Spire is optional collecting creature that summons smaller enemies. Focus fire, watch for grab attacks.
Watcher Knights are boss gauntlet of 6 rolling knights in City of Tears. Fight two at a time. Tests resource management across multi-stage fight.
Nosk is optional boss that mimics forms. Appears as NPC mimicry in Deepnest. Stealth-based boss with predictable patterns once understood.
Traitor Lord in Queen's Gardens is aggressive mantis with tough jump mechanics. Multiple attack patterns.
Tier 4 — Late Game Bosses (Hard)
Hornet (second encounter) in Kingdom's Edge. Greatly improved AI, new moves, rapid aggression. Tests all movement skills.
Grimm (Troupe Master) if you're in Grimm Troupe DLC. Teleporting, fire-based attacks, stunning aesthetics. Optional late-game DLC boss.
Broken Vessel/Lost Kin is the rematch of the Broken Vessel in Dream realm. Much faster, much more aggressive than original encounter.
White Defender is rematch of Dung Defender in Dream realm. Faster than original, more complex attacks.
Failed Champion is rematch of False Knight in Dream realm.
Soul Tyrant is rematch of Soul Master in Dream realm. Much harder.
Uumuu is optional boss in Fog Canyon. Electric jellyfish with crowd control. Requires specific strategy.
Sisters of Battle is rematch of Mantis Lords in Godmaster Pantheon. Three mantis lords simultaneously.
Tier 5 — Endgame Bosses (Very Hard)
Pure Vessel is the intended protagonist's uncorrupted form. Unlocked via Godmaster DLC. Fast, aggressive, demanding pattern recognition.
Nightmare King Grimm is Grimm's empowered form in Grimm Troupe DLC. Considered one of the hardest optional bosses in gaming.
Absolute Radiance is the true final boss. Only accessible through Godmaster Pantheon gauntlet or specific completionist path. The highest-tier challenge.
God Tamer in Godmaster DLC is optional boss that proves the Pantheon gauntlet is intended. Strong all-around fight.
No Eyes is atmospheric ghost encounter that becomes required boss when you find it. More atmospheric than challenging.
Grey Prince Zote is Zote quest-related boss. Fairly manageable but thematically satisfying.
The Hardest Bosses (S-Tier Challenge)
Nightmare King Grimm (already mentioned). Considered by many the most demanding boss fight in Hollow Knight base content.
Pure Vessel (already mentioned).
Absolute Radiance (already mentioned).
The Radiance (without Absolute modifier) is the base game's "true ending" boss. Complex three-phase fight with escalating difficulty.
Markoth in Godmaster Pantheon is sword-throwing boss with predictable but lethal attacks.
Soul Master and Soul Tyrant in Pantheon 4 force you to fight the boss rapidly without mistakes.
The Pantheon Gauntlets
Godmaster DLC introduces five Pantheon challenges:
Pantheon of the Master — gauntlet of Tier 1-2 bosses.
Pantheon of the Artist — includes Tier 2-3 bosses.
Pantheon of the Sage — includes Tier 3-4 bosses.
Pantheon of the Knight — includes almost all bosses.
Pantheon of Hallownest — all 42 bosses back to back. No breaks. Culminates in Absolute Radiance. The ultimate Hollow Knight challenge.
Path of Pain is a difficult platforming challenge in White Palace. Not technically a boss fight but arguably the most demanding platforming in any 2D game. Considered by many the hardest content in all of Hollow Knight.
The Best Charms for Each Boss
Our Hollow Knight charms guide covers charm combinations in depth. Key boss-specific recommendations:
For Nightmare King Grimm: Unbreakable Strength + Shaman Stone + Quick Slash for fast damage.
For Pure Vessel: Quick Slash + Mark of Pride + Stalwart Shell for durability.
For Absolute Radiance: Quick Slash + Unbreakable Strength + Quick Focus for DPS.
For Pantheon runs: Combined DPS and defensive charms with Grubsong for soul generation.
Why Hollow Knight Bosses Matter
Team Cherry designed bosses that genuinely test all the skills the game teaches. Movement precision (dash, wall-jumping, pogo). Spell casting (for soul management). Nail timing (for parries and counters). Resource management (for soul between spells and focus healing).
Every boss fight is beatable with enough practice. There are no "cheese" strategies that work for all fights — you have to actually learn each fight individually. This respect for player mastery is why Hollow Knight's boss design is often cited as among the best in gaming.
The broader metroidvania coverage discusses the genre. Games like Hollow Knight covers alternatives that have attempted similar design philosophy.
Start with Mantis Lords to understand "fair but demanding" boss design. Progress through the main game encountering bosses in order. Tackle Path of Pain for the hardest platforming challenge. Complete Pantheon of Hallownest for the ultimate test. Each boss teaches specific skills that make subsequent fights easier.
The satisfaction of mastering Hollow Knight's boss gauntlet is unmatched in any game. The game respects your ability to learn and improve, and every boss reward feels earned.
