Elden Ring Tips: The Complete Beginner and Advanced Guide for 2026
Essential Elden Ring tips covering early game survival, build optimization, exploration strategy, and Shadow of the Erdtree DLC preparation.
Elden Ring is one of the most acclaimed games ever made, but it's also genuinely challenging. FromSoftware's open world is less forgiving than Skyrim — wandering into the wrong area can end your run quickly. Understanding fundamental systems, knowing which regions are appropriate for your level, and optimizing your build all make the difference between frustration and mastery.
This guide covers essential tips for new players and returning veterans, with emphasis on both the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.
Starting Your Adventure
Your starting class matters less than you think. Stats can be modified through leveling. But starting class determines your initial gear and starting stats. Popular picks:
- Vagabond — best starting stats for strength/dex builds
- Samurai — best starting dex with bow and katana
- Prophet — best starting faith with incantation staff
- Astrologer — best starting intelligence with glintstone staff
- Hero — pure strength
- Bandit — stealth/arcane focus
- Warrior — dual-wielding dex
- Confessor — balanced strength/faith hybrid
Wretch gives you maximum flexibility but no starting gear.
The default starting location is Limgrave. Follow the guiding grace (blue wisps) toward Stormveil Castle for the intended early game progression.
Essential Early Tips
Explore first, fight second. Elden Ring rewards exploration enormously. Skip Stormveil for a few hours to explore Limgrave, Weeping Peninsula, and Liurnia — you'll gain levels and items that make future fights easier.
Torrent is your friend. Your spectral horse Torrent has double jump and faster movement. Summon Torrent whenever you're moving through open areas.
Stakes of Marika are everywhere. These teleport you back to the nearest spot if you die. Less grinding for retries.
Bonfires are Graces here. They let you level up, respawn enemies, teleport, and manage flasks.
Flask management priorities:
- Crimson Tears heal HP
- Cerulean Tears restore FP (magic meter)
- Distribute them based on your build (melee = more Crimson, mage = more Cerulean)
Sacred Tears increase flask size. Find these at churches scattered throughout the world.
Golden Seeds add flask uses. Collect these to expand your total flask count.
Leveling Strategy
Focus on your primary stat. Don't spread level investments. Vigor (HP) should reach 40-50 by mid-game. Your primary damage stat (Strength, Dex, Int, Faith, or Arcane) should reach 60-80.
Vigor is the most important stat. Low Vigor means one-shot deaths to even normal enemies in later regions. Prioritize Vigor early.
Mind for spellcasters. Mind controls FP (mana). Dedicated spellcasters need 30+ Mind.
Endurance for stamina. Important for everyone but especially melee builds. 30+ Endurance for comfortable melee combat.
Strength/Dex/Int/Faith/Arcane determine damage. Your build determines which to prioritize.
Don't over-level early. The mid-game difficulty curves assume you've completed specific content. Over-leveling in Limgrave makes Liurnia trivial but under-leveling at Raya Lucaria.
Combat Tips
Dodge roll direction matters. Rolling backward rarely works; roll sideways to avoid sweep attacks; roll into the attack to avoid telegraphed strikes.
Shield-blocking is viable. Greatshields block 100% physical damage from most attacks. Drain stamina-based rather than HP-based.
Parry timing is specific. Parry frames are tight. Practice on low-stakes enemies before attempting parries on bosses.
Stance damage matters. Breaking enemy posture enables massive critical hits. Weapons with high stance damage (Great Hammers, Colossal Swords) break posture quickly.
Poise determines stagger resistance. Heavier armor = better poise, but slower rolling. Light Armor's fast roll saves your life in many fights.
Spirit Ashes are your friends. Summon spirits at bosses with specific ash spirits for help. Mimic Tear especially remains S-tier.
Jumping attacks stagger easier. Heavy weapons benefit most from jumping attacks. Strength builds should jump regularly.
Build Optimization
Choose your weapon type early. Respecs are expensive (one Larval Tear per respec). Pick your preferred combat style early.
Infusions change weapon damage type. A weapon with Heavy infusion scales with Strength. Keen = Dexterity. Sacred = Faith. Magic = Intelligence. Blood = Arcane.
Max upgrade levels matter. A +25 weapon deals enormously more damage than the same weapon at +10. Upgrade your primary weapon regularly.
Somber Smithing Stones upgrade special weapons. Standard Smithing Stones upgrade regular weapons. Special weapons (boss drops) use different stones.
Talismans are crucial. Equip talismans that complement your build. Erdtree's Favor is universal. Sacred Scorpion Charm for faith builds. Our Elden Ring best builds guide covers optimal combinations.
Exploration Tips
Every region has a rune scaling. Enemy difficulty scales with distance from starting area. Stormveil → Liurnia → Caelid → Altus Plateau → Mountaintops → Crumbling Farum Azula.
Caelid is a trap for under-leveled players. Beautiful and atmospheric but enemies will one-shot you. Visit when appropriate level.
Hidden caves and catacombs everywhere. Use Torrent's jumping to reach elevated areas. Look for patches of flickering grass that indicate items.
NPCs give quests. Talk to every NPC, exhaust dialogue, remember their locations. Many quests have specific trigger points.
Item finder talisman reveals nearby items. Silver Pickled Fowl Foot buffs item discovery temporarily.
Shadow of the Erdtree DLC
Prerequisites: Beat Mohg, Lord of Blood to access DLC.
Scadutree Fragments amplify damage/defense in DLC. Collect these to progress. Without them, DLC enemies are brutal.
Revered Spirit Ashes buff your summons in DLC.
DLC weapons and armor introduce new builds. Rellana's Twin Blades and Milady are particularly popular.
Mesmer Soldier enemies one-shot unprepared players. Scadutree Fragments are mandatory.
Final boss is brutal. Come prepared with maxed Scadutree Fragments, strong weapon, and patient play.
The Hardest Bosses
Malenia, Blade of Miquella has the infamous Waterfowl Dance. Dodge this: stay at medium range, jump forward into her during the windup, dodge the remaining strikes.
Radagon/Elden Beast is the final boss of base game. Radagon stunlocks; Elden Beast roams. Use Torrent for Elden Beast.
Sword Saint Isshin (from Sekiro, not Elden Ring but worth noting) has similar "final boss of the game" design.
Promised Consort Radahn (Shadow of the Erdtree final boss) is divisive. Dodge the gravity pull, commit to deflection, don't panic.
Malenia has an ash summon that helps. Finding Vigil of the Niall gives you a fire giant summon that helps significantly.
Online Features
Co-op summoning requires Tarnished Furled Finger. Use at summoning sign to summon other players.
Password summon lets you find specific friends even at different levels.
Message system leaves notes for other players. Rate helpful messages positively (restores your HP).
Invasions happen in co-op. One invader against a team. Be ready for surprises.
PvP is mostly gravelord invasion or duels. Not everyone's preferred content but optional.
Mod Considerations
Mods require offline mode. Mods disable multiplayer for safety.
Elden Ring Reforged is the most comprehensive overhaul mod.
Seamless Co-op allows full co-op play through the entire game (base game mechanic is invasion-focused).
What we make at Choost
We're a small indie studio. Our games: Granny's Rampage — a bullet heaven where grandma grabs a minigun and fights through hell — and Granny's Gambit, a Victorian deckbuilder roguelike starring a card-slinging nan with a chip on her shoulder. Granny's Rampage is $2.99 on itch (Windows) and Google Play (Android), with the Steam launch on June 22 (also $2.99). Granny's Gambit is pay-what-you-want on itch.
Why Elden Ring Works
Elden Ring succeeds because it combines FromSoftware's design philosophy with open-world exploration. The broader soulslike coverage explores the genre. Games like Elden Ring extend different aspects of its design.
The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC essentially delivered a full sequel's worth of content. The ongoing patches continue refining balance. Active community produces constant content analysis and build guides.
Start with Vagabond for new player safety. Explore Limgrave thoroughly before Stormveil. Keep Vigor around 40-50 in mid-game. Use summons liberally without shame. Our best weapons guide and builds guide cover specific optimization. Elden Ring rewards 100+ hours of investment and every hour feels meaningful.
